  • The salary range for this position is $55,684 to $66,578 pro rata.
  • 12-month fixed-term contract with varying hours of work throughout the year, equivalent to 0.75 Full-Time Equivalent.

He angitūtanga | About the role

The front counter Visitor Centre position is one of the most public roles within the Department and is pivotal to our overall success. As the departmental host, you are responsible for ensuring that every person who walks through the door gets the best possible service, whether they're looking for information (or kiwi's), checking out the displays, purchasing tramping equipment or just escaping the rain. You will need to be friendly, knowledgeable, organised, quick thinking and excel at customer service.

The role varies from day to day and can include:

  • Providing visitors with up-to-date information about recreational opportunities and conservation projects, both locally and nationwide
  • Providing visitors with tramping information, weather conditions, track conditions, and safety recommendations
  • Understanding and using the USED Great Walk Booking system
  • Selling quality, conservation-related merchandise, and outdoor safety equipment
  • Answering phone calls relating to hunting, tramping and a myriad of other enquiries
  • Managing radio calls from field staff and ensuring health and safety procedures are followed to keep field staff safe
  • Ensuring the visitor centre always looks tidy and presentable, shelves are fully stocked, and facilities are clean
  • Being one of the key users of our hunting permit database
  • Consistently ensuring high standards of service are delivered and visitor centre systems, processes and operating procedures are followed.
  • helping to train and support temporary Visitor Centre rangers.

Your hours of work will vary throughout the year to cover seasonal peaks and will include work on statutory holidays and weekends. Your rostered hours are usually split as follows: 40 hours per week – 4 months of Summer, 30 hours per week – 4 months of Autumn and Spring, 20 hours per week – 4 months of Winter, the exact dates and hours will be determined on a roster basis and will be discussed on appointment.

The ideal applicant will have the following:

  • The ability to maintain high standards while working under pressure and/or performing repetitive tasks
  • Problem solving abilities, initiative, and a positive ‘can-do' attitude
  • Enjoy interacting with the public
  • Understanding of recreation and tourism opportunities throughout New Zealand and knowledge of conservation or recreational activities available on Rakiura / Stewart Island and the wider Southern South Island Region
  • A strong health and safety focus
  • Experience/ demonstrated competence in customer service, computer skills, sales, and retail.
  • Experience managing/navigating databases.
  • The ability to convey visitor safety information clearly, concisely and in a positive manner.
  • Enthusiasm for and an active interest in outdoor pursuits and conservation.
