Cardiology Registrar

The Cardiology service at Waikato is expanding and we are looking to increase our registrars along with other medical personnel.  This is an exciting opportunity to join us in 2024.

Applications are invited for registrars to work in the cardiology department at Waikato Hospital for a six- or twelve-month run.

These positions are suitable for RMOs who have completed PGY2 or equivalent with a good reference and intend to prepare for the FRACP examination. It is also highly advantageous for someone who has passed the exam and wants to do a cardiology run as part of their advanced training.

Waikato Hospital is a teaching hospital and the major tertiary referral centre providing specialised and emergency healthcare for the Waikato and Te Manawi Taki or Midlands area, with a catchment population of 900,000 people. It is the only major hospital in New Zealand to offer all surgical specialties on one campus and is the major trauma hospital for the central North Island. The cardiology department has state-of the-art facilities.

The department is busy but the teams are extremely supportive. The service admits approximately 6,000 patients a year and performs 3,000 to 4,000 angiograms, 1,000 angioplasties as well as over 400 electrophysiological procedures in a year. There are nine cardiologists on the ward plus a similar number of SMOs in the four cath labs working collegially. All cardiac subspecialties are represented, including advanced imaging, electrophysiology, structural, and acute cardiology.

We are based in Hamilton, the third largest city in the North Island. It is 1½ hours from Auckland via a new expressway, and offers a great lifestyle. As the largest employer in Hamilton, there is a varied and approachable social network based around the hospital. It is within easy reach of both west coast surfing and east coast leisure beaches. Ski-fields and hot pools are a few hours away, and there are outstanding opportunities for hiking, fishing, biking and many other outdoor activities, providing plenty of options for recreation.

Please note - it is your responsibility to provide three current references.  To print off the referee report, please click on the "Reference form" icon below.  Please ask your referees to return the completed form to us, or you can attach them to this application.
