About us:
The Ministry for Regulation is a newly established small Government agency with a big job to do.
We are charged with improving the rules and regulations imposed by Government to make them more streamlined and easier for New Zealanders to navigate.

About the Role:
We are looking for a Senior Legal Advisor to join a professional and results driven legal team based in Wellington.
As our Senior Legal Advisor you will be responsible for providing robust and practical legal advice on a complex range of issues to help produce well-reasoned and high-quality decisions.
In this role you will:
- understand and advise on constitutional and administrative law, the public management system, and the regulatory management system
- deliver complex and sometimes urgent legal advice to various senior stakeholders including Ministers and senior leaders
- proactively engage with Crown Law and other departmental legal teams
- assist with legislative and regulatory processes including sector reviews
- develop and provide corporate legal services such as advising on contracts and procurement; official information and privacy requests; health and safety; and internal policies.
The successful candidate must be able to hold a NZ Government National Security Clearance.
This role is banded from $127,142 - $168,973. The sucessful candidate will be appointed within this range dependent on skills and experience.
You will have the following:
- A tertiary qualification in law while currently holding or be eligible to hold a practising certificate
- Knowledge of the machinery of government and of public sector and government processes
- Significant strategic, conceptual and critical thinking skills and strong analytical ability
- Confidence to apply your skills and knowledge across a breadth of legal disciplines
- An ability to convey complex legal issues succinctly - verbally and in writing
- Desire to share your experience and knowledge with other members in the team
- Flexibility and resilience to handle changing and competing demands while managing your workload.
The following direct experience will be beneficial:
- Advising and supporting Ministers and senior leaders to make informed decisions and manage risk
- Drafting contracts and knowledge of government procurement rules and processes
- Progressing legislative and regulatory proposals from policy design to implementation
